Grow: start to harvest
Brown sugar is manufactured by combining or retaining molasses with refined sucrose. You can grow sugar beet from seed or sugarcane from stem pieces, but backyard growing alone does not produce the packaged ingredient.
- START WITH
- There is no brown-sugar seed
- CLIMATE
- Sugar beet prefers cool seasons; sugarcane needs long tropical warmth
- LIGHT
- Full sun
- SOIL
- Deep, fertile, well-drained soil
- 1
Start it
For the seed route, sow sugar-beet seed 1/2 inch deep 1–2 inches apart in cool spring soil. Thin seedlings after emergence.
- 2
Give it room
Thin beets to 4–6 inches apart with rows 18–24 inches apart.
- 3
Water correctly
Supply about 1 inch weekly and keep growth steady; reduce water near harvest.
- 4
Care for it
Weed early and keep shoulders lightly covered. The root accumulates sucrose but remains a vegetable—not finished brown sugar.
- 5
Harvest
Lift mature roots in roughly 90–120 days. Commercial extraction, purification, crystallization, and molasses control create food-grade brown sugar.
Sugar beet roots mature in one season; true brown sugar requires processing beyond planting and harvest.
